Abstract
This study describes the way Joko Widodo’s interpersonal meaning in his Speech on the 74th Indonesia Independence Day. Since Joko Widodo is a non-native speaker of English, he needed to plan to find a solution to his problem in conveying his messages through his Speech. In this study, the discussion was limited by finding out the Speech's interpersonal meaning, which can be used to dig up the speaker’s hidden meanings through what he is saying in the Speech. This is a qualitative study, and qualitative data are also used to strengthen the qualitative analysis. The concept of discourse analysis from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) is employed to reveal the hidden meanings behind a speech. The research involved MOOD and modality analysis and appraisal system analysis to know further about the interpersonal meaning of Joko Widodo towards Indonesia through his Speech. The analysis reveals that in terms of grammar analysis shows that President Widodo was delivering a speech in Indonesia's name and some aspects of life to achieve goals better future of Indonesia. In delivering his Speech, Joko Widodo also firmly believed that he would be able to reach his goals. It showed that President Widodo was confident to give information to his audience about the topics. The large parts of the clauses of the Speech are declarative because, in his Speech, Joko Widodo did a monologue speech act to express and share pieces of information. Some uses of modality which show the speaker’s judgment is also identified. Joko Widodo uses modalization to talk about the probability of the subject matter. The appraisal analysis shows that Judgement, which is one of the Appraisal system categories, is the most frequent appraisal device used in the Speech. In that sense, Joko Widodo’s stance or attitude towards Indonesia is strongly positive. It can be concluded that by the elaborate use of interpersonal strategies, Joko Widodo successfully projects his ideas and messages to the audience. Finally, the writer concludes that it is essential to understand any kind of Speech well. It can be done by analyzing that Speech through its interpersonal meaning and its appraisal system. Hopefully, this study can beuseful for readers, especially English Department students, to be able to understand the meaning behind a text.
