Abstract

The objectives of this study are: (1) to identify the types of idioms found in the Avengers Endgame movie, (2) to interpret the meaning of the symbol contains in the idiom expression found in the Avengers Endgame movie. In this research, I am as the researcher used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The object of this research is ‘The Avengers Endgame Movie’ which is American fiction war movie directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. I used Makkai‘s classification of idioms to collect the data. In addition, I also used Roland Barthes‘ emiotic theory of two rates of signification to analyze the meaning of symbol contained in the idiomatic expression found in ‘The Avengers Endgame Movie’. The primary data of this research are dialogues spoken by the characters of ‘The Avengers Endgame Movie’. The results of this research show that there are 68 idiomatic expressions which revealed in the movie. In those 68 idiomatic expressions there are found some idioms of lexemic categories, they are 31 idioms of phrasal verb; 11 idioms of phrasal compound; 10 idioms of tournures; and 15 idioms of pseudo-idiom. There is also found idiom of sememic categories, which is first base idiom. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that there are 4 subcategories of lexemic idiom and 1 subcategory of sememic idiom. From those 68 idiomatic expressions, there are 21 idiomatic expressions containing symbol. Those symbols are: Short�Hand, Hell, Sideways, Fire, Shot, Cost, Banana, Flame, Board, Pants, Cloud, Head, Eyes, Window, Slice, Freeze, Ball, Fishy, Pain, Cow, Clip. Based on Roland Barthes‘s semiotic theory, all of those symbols have their denotative and connotative meanings which construct the meaning of the idiomatic expressions.
