Abstract

This study is a discourse study conducted to determine the interpersonal meaning realized through Thanos’ mood types, the central villain in Avengers: Endgame movie, and how those mood types describe Thanos’ characteristics. The data of this study were Thanos’ utterances in the movie. The unit of analysis is clauses, which were segmented from the utterances. They were analyzed and interpreted based on Halliday’s (1994) interpersonal meaning framework from the Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) perspective. SFG views language as a resource of meaning-making, and interpersonal meaning is one of the meanings of language, which shows the role relationship between interlocutors. The analysis result shows that there were 86 clauses in Thanos’ utterances, of which 75 of them were major clauses and 11 were minor clauses. The major clauses were categorized into mood types: declarative and interrogative mood and imperative mood. The numbers of declarative moods were 56, interrogative moods were 5, while imperative moods were 14. The analysis of the mood types shows that Thanos most likely produced statements and commands. It means Thanos is someone who tends to declare his idea, which is about saving the universe from destruction. By using more statements, he tried to tell everyone, in the movie context Avengers, that whatever he did was right and nobody could change it. He also produced commands that emphasized that he acted as a leader and wanted to take everything under his control. Based on the grammatical analysis, it can be identified that as a villain in the movie, Thanos is an idealist person, which means he is a person who remains on his principles. He wanted to reach his goal based on his idea, even though it could put many people in danger.
