Abstract

This final project was conducted to determine the correlation between students' adjective mastery and their ability to write a descriptive text. The objective of the study was to investigate if there is a correlation between students' mastery of adjectives and their ability in writing descriptive text. This research took place at SMA Negeri 8 Semarang. The subjects of this research were students from X MIPA 2 which there were 36 students as the participants of the study. The study dealth with the students' adjectives mastery and their ability in writing descriptive text. In this study, adjectives mastery refers to the students' ability to recognize adjectives and know how to use them in writing descriptive texts. This was a quantitative correlational study. The purposive sampling technique was used as the sampling method. The instruments for collecting the data were tests. There were two tests to obtain the data, the writing descriptive text test and the adjective mastery test types used; multiple-choice test items, matching, and antonyms. The Pearson product-moment correlation analysis showed a moderately positive correlation between students' adjective mastery and their ability to write a descriptive text. Based on the findings of the analysis using SPSS 25 program, it was obtained that the correlation coefficient was higher than the rtable (0.580 > 0.325). Besides, the criteria for correlation 0.580 was considered moderate. It implies that the research hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Moreover, the students considered using mostly simple sentences in their descriptive text writing, which was concluded by the lexical density. Based on the findings it can be suggested firstly, for the students, they need to improve adjectives mastery because adjective mastery has an essential role in creating good descriptive text. Secondly, students must be assisted and motivated in learning parts of speech, especially in the mastery of adjectives to better understand writing descriptive texts. Thirdly, for another researcher who has the same interest in this topic, this study may be a relevant previous study.
