Abstract

This research analyzed the realization of interpersonal meaning in students’ narrative texts. The purposes of this research were to find out the realization of interpersonal meaning in the students’ narrative texts through the system of Mood, and Modality. The object of this study was the three different narrative texts written by three students in the eight-semester of the English Department of Universitas Negeri Semarang in the academic year 2019/2020. This study employed a qualitative approach. Discourse analysis of the interpersonal meaning based on Halliday’s theory was used to analyze the realization through the system of Mood and Modality in the students’ narrative texts that in advance had been divided into clauses. The results of this study showed that the students wrote these narrative texts as the one-way communication that presented the stories as the information to the readers, in which it suited the purpose of the narrative text, regarding the main purpose of narrative text is to tell a story to entertain the readers. It was proven by the dominance of declarative mood type that was realized in the form of statements, while other mood types were less used by the students. The students put themselves as the narrator of the story, in other words, the students did not act as any character in these stories since the most frequent subjects found were in the forms of nouns and personal pronouns of the third-person point of view. All of the experiences or activities were presented in the past since the use of past tense was the most dominant finite used by the students in writing the narrative texts. Meanwhile, there were a small number of modalities that were found in these stories. The type of modality was dominated by probability and followed by usuality, while the obligation and inclination had the same frequency. It could be stated that the domination of probability in low degree indicated the students’ intention in giving information about the possibility of something that happened in the story, while the domination of usuality that mostly expressed in high degree represented the activity that always been done by the characters in the story. Based on the findings and discussions, the interpersonal meaning was realized in these students’ narrative texts, and the students were able to write narrative texts based on the requirements of narrative texts especially in the use of grammar as part of language features.
