Abstract

English as an international language gives an important role in Indonesia but there are some problems coming out in teaching English. In this situation, the role of the English teacher is important to enhance the students’ interest in learning English. A teacher is required to be able to implement appropriate strategies in the learning process, one of them is scaffolding. Scaffolds could motivate the students’ interest related to the task. Even there are some studies related to the scaffolding implementation in teaching English, they only observed the types of scaffolding without observing the teacher’s challenges in implementing scaffolding. This research was a qualitative research of which the subject was an English teacher at Senior High School 1 Ambarawa. The data were gathered by interviewing the English teacher, recording video of the process of English teaching, and observing her English teaching process. The results showed the English teacher under the study had been implemented all types of scaffolding of Walqui (2006), they were modeling, bridging, contextualizing, schema building, re-presenting text, and developing metacognition. She was implemented scaffolding in some certain situation based on the types of scaffolding. Based on the results of observing the teacher in her English teaching process and interviewing the English teacher under study, there were several challenges faced by teacher in implementing scaffolding. They were students’ interest, class size, and class duration.
