Abstract

Formulaic expressions have an important role in spoken English. EFL students need formulaic expressions to help them produce natural and fluent English, especially in speaking. This study investigates formulaic expression used in transactional conversation spoken by English Department students. By using qualitative approach, this research intends to know the formulaic expressions that has been acquired by the students. However, this study only investigates two types of formulaic expressions, those are inserts and collocations. The subject of this study is class E from second semester students of English department in the academic year of 2016/2017. The data were taken from the transactional conversation videos which were created and recorded by second semester English department students in order to fulfill their final assignment in transactional conversation class. I used Biber et al (1999) and Celce Murcia theory to analyze the types of formulaic expression. The findings of the study show that the students used both collocations and inserts. Inserts are produced more frequently than the collocation. the percentage of insert that are produced is 62%, meanwhile the collocation is 38%. Insert appeared 215 times, meanwhile collocation only appeared 215 times. I found out that the students used all insert types in their interaction. Meanwhile, the students used seven out of eight collocation types. The combination of verb and noun is the most frequent collocation type used among other collocation types. Whereas, response form is the most frequent insert type that is produced by the students. Even though the students produced insert and collocation, sometimes the students produce unnatural and incorrect collocation and insert. It happened because there is direct translation from Indonesia language. Based on the findings, the students are still lack in using formulaic expression, there are still unnatural and incorrect formulaic expression used in their conversation. Giving a lot of exposure about formulaic expression to the EFL learners may help them produce natural or correct formulaic expression in order to speak English fluently and native-like.
