Abstract

This study analyzes the discourse in Gus Van Sant’s “Good Will Hunting” movie. Semantic Discourse Analysis is used in conducting this research analysis, in which it concerned in how the characters use English as a language in their daily life, what Semantic Discourse Analysis aspects, and the meanings contained in their utterances. This study aims to reveal the discourse surface structures, information distribution and the meaning of the discourse in the chosen movie. In revealing how discourse surface structures, information distribution, and the meanings of the discourse are embedded, this study uses Semantic Discourse Analysis (SDA) suggested by Teun Van Dijk (1985). The script of characters’ conversation in the movie is the main source of data. First, the surface structure and information distribution of the discourse were analyzed. The next step is analyzing the speech acts in the discourse. The last step is interpreting the meaning of the discourse. It was found that based on the analysis result, the discourse surface structure mostly appear in Local Coherence Assignment (LCA) than in Global Coherence Assignment (GCA). It means they are having respective propositions in which each has a different function in a statement. However, some of the discourse in which has GCA as the surface structure are bringing the characters’ ideology and background. Then, for the information distribution of the discourse, it was found that mostly they were Interactional/Social than Cognitive point of view. Most of the discourses are meaningful utterances from the movie characters that are related to our daily life, especially education. Thus, the knowledge of interpreting the discourse meaning can help us to find the core meaning of someone’s utterance. In conclusion, the discourse in the chosen movie has determined having higher amount of LCA in the type of functional ordering, whereas there are lower amount of GCA. The discourses have higher number in Interactional/Social POV information distribution than Cognitive POV. In case of the meanings found in the discourse that are mostly in educational context, this study may suitable for teachers, discourse analysists, and general readers who are interested in analyzing the aspects and meanings of discourse in various sources.
