Abstract

Speech is one type of spoken communication that is done formally in front of people on a particular occasion. Its goal can be varied such as to give information, to persuade, or to commemorate. This study that is categorized as a discourse analysis that applies descriptive qualitative method aimed to investigate the interpersonal meanings lying on the speech that was delivered by Anne Hathaway as the goodwill ambassador of United Nations Women for commemorating international women’s day. Data of the study was analyzed applying two ways of analysis; grammatical and lexical analysis. Both analyses could reveal how interpersonal meanings are realized in the speech. The findings of the analyses were tabulated. For the findings of MOOD system analysis, it appears that Anne Hathaway mostly used declaratives in delivering her speech with percentage 93.49%. She stands the most responsible person in his speech by using self-mention “I” with the percentage 19.53%, below the Subject “Others” referring to the other subjects not including all pronouns with percentage 37.87%. The findings of modality system analysis come up with modal verbs as the most appeared modal with the percentage 82.05%, indicating that she told the audience more about her certainty, necessity, and capability. The findings of the appraisal seem similar to modality which the most used one is judgment with the percentage 57.69%. Findings of this study can be used as an example for researcher to conduct their research, for teachers to teach their students not only about grammar and meaning but also how to make a good text by paying more attention to the choice of words and situation surrounding the text so that the students can get the writer or speaker’s intention through the text.
