Abstract

This thesis aimed at finding the appraisal resources employed in the Jakarta Post’s editorial and analyzing the author’s attitude towards the issue written being discussed. It utilized a qualitative approach, in the form of text analysis. Editorials in a newspaper present recent issues in society from the perspectives of the newspaper editors. Thus, the editorial tends to contain either positive or negative attitudes toward the issue. One of the theories to examine the author’s attitudes realized in a text is the Appraisal Framework by Martin and White (2005). The object of the study is the Jakarta Post’s editorial dated June 22, 2020, entitled ‘Redefining Pancasila’. the text was analyzed by the tools offered in the Appraisal framework, namely Attitude, Engagement, and Graduation. Attitude analysis was the focus of the research as with the aim of the research. the unit of the analysis in this research was clause and clause-complexes. The result of the study depicted that first, the three systems of Appraisal were employed in the editorial text. The text was divided into 25 clauses and chunks, and each chunk can be consist of one or more Appraisal resources covering the three subsystems. The Appraisal resources found in the text are 88 items. The Attitude system is the most used sub-system in the text with 40 items (45.4%) out of 88 Appraisal items analyzed. Followed by an Engagement system with 25 items (28.4%). Last, the Graduation system with 23 items (26.2%). Second, the author's attitude conveyed in the text is a mainly negative attitude. It can be seen by the domination of negative affect, negative judgment, and negative appreciation. It is indicated that the author wants to deliver his viewpoint of the issue about 'Redefining Pancasila' that it is not supposed to be done by The House of the Representatives. Moreover, the author intends to persuade the reader not to agree with the 'Pancasila Ideology Guidelines' bill.
