Abstract

This final project analyzed the materials in a textbook “When English Rings a Bell” for seventh graders that cater to the students‟ need for communicative competence. The materials were analyzed to know whether communicative competencies are available or unavailable there. They are analyzed based on Celce Murcia‟s communicative competencies which are Socio-cultural, Discourse, Linguistic, Formulaic, Interactional, and Strategic Competence. This study was using a descriptive qualitative method. The research data are the materials of each chapter in the textbook. The instrument used is a checklist table adapted from Celce Murcia et al‟ s model of communicative competence. The object of this study is a book entitled “When English Rings a Bell.” (published by Pusat Kurikulum dan Perbukuan Balitbang, Kemdikbud) It was published in 2014. The research instrument was validated by some experts. I have read the book and each material will be analyzed later. I analyzed the data based on several indicators provided in the research instrument. I explained the result in a description. The result showed that five out of six competencies are available in this book through the instructions, text, and dialogues provided in the book. However, the researcher noticed that pronunciation, which is part of Linguistic/Phonetic Competence is not available in this book. Other components of communicative competence are mostly available with some minor revision needed, but it can be considered as available. I concluded the materials in each chapter of this textbook are compatible enough to cater to the students‟ need for communicative competencies. Nevertheless, the publisher of this book should concern more about the presence of Linguistic/Phonetic Competence. Moreover, the book must pay attention to the repetitive instructions that are presented in each chapter
