Abstract

Speaking skill has been considered as one of the skill that students need to master in order to compete in the global world. In this consideration, speaking skill requires students to interact with other people. Most of the students find it difficult to express their ideas because of anxiety/self-esteem issue. One of the techniques the teachers can employ to improve the students‟ speaking skill is Three-step Interview (TSI). This study was conducted based on (Kirbas, 2017) and (J. Richards & Rodgers, 1986) theories that students must learn together in groups and give students opportunity to speak. This study focused on analyzing students‟ improvement in speaking skill using Three-step Interview towards their anxiety issue in foreign language class. The participants consisted of 18 students and 1 English teacher in SMP Al-Islam Gunungpati Semarang. This study used a qualitative case study methodology. The instruments used were observation sheet, interview guidelines, and questionnaire. From the qualitative and quantitative data analysis, we can conclude that Three-step Interview learning technique can reduce the students‟ anxiety level. Some suggestion can be drawn. First, the teachers need to be more creative to find a better situation in teaching that could encourage the students. Lastly, the next researchers need to be flexible in conducting their research using other technique and method in their current condition in order to improve students‟ speaking skill.
