Abstract

There are at least two writing problems that are frequently cited in existing research i.e. difficulties to find ideas and lack of vocabulary. However, little do we know that classroom atmosphere also central to contribute to the success of a writing class. More specifically, materials and media in writing are too plain. Therefore,those materials and mediacannot stimulate students’ interest in learning writing, especially writing a recount text. In responding to this problem, this study proposes ‘Holiday Scrapbook’ in teaching recount text with an aim to stimulate the students’ imagination and to build interest in writing a recount text. Students can share and create their own design of Scrapbook with their friends. They can also develop their ability in writing recount text. This research used a quasi-experimental research design. The researcher took the data from the students of grade eight of SMP N 2 Gubug in academic year of 2018/2019. The findings showed that students were difficult to acquire vocabulary in writing recount text. After being taught using Holiday Scrapbook, the mean score of experimental group increased from 50.83 to 67.83. The result of t-test was 0.000 which was lower than 0.05. It meant that in the final condition there was significant difference after the group received the treatment. In other words, Holiday Scrapbook improved students’ writing skill of recount text
