Abstract

This study deals with analyzing language to investigate how interpersonal meaning of Interpersonal Meaning of Donald Trump‘s Declaration on Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi‘s Death is realized. The main purpose of this study is to find out the meaning underlying in every utterance of the speech using appraisal system to reveal speaker‘s attitude and judgement he delivered. The object of the study is a speech of Donald Trump‘s Declaration on Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi‘s Death which has been transcribed into written form. The data collected are analyzed based on discourse analysis from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics divided into three units of analysis; Mood Analysis, Grammar Analysis, and Appraisal Analysis. Qualitative data are used to improve the result and findings of the research. The result of this study showed that the speaker used ‗He‘ most of the time to describe Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi in some condition when the raid happened. Simple past tense used to give clear picture of the attack to the audience. The speaker rarely used expression of doubt using modals showing that he was confident with what he was saying. All sentences constructed in the speech are declarative mood. The appraisal analysis present that expressions found in the speech are mostly categorized into Judgement for many utterances are describing how the raid in the issue happened. In addition, Trump depicted Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi in negative ways as he called him coward or desperate. Affect and valuation are rarely found in the speech From the findings, the writer can conclude that speech covers variance of meaning depends on words that the speaker uses. Analyzing speech through interpersonal meaning and its appraisal system can help the reader to unveil true attitude and point of view of the speaker, nonetheless, especially for English Department students so that they are able to comprehend a meaning behind a text well.
