Abstract

Logic and emotion are something that lies in the deep of the human mind that affect how people act. This study conducted to reveal the representation of logic and emotion of the main characters in novel A Walk to Remember as part of human psyche. The topic of the study is The Representation of Logic and Emotion of the Main Character in Nicholas Sparks’ A Walk to Remember. The objectives of this study are two, which are 1) to describe the portrayal of logic and emotion in the novel, 2) to explain how logic and emotion of the main character are represented in the novel. Sparks’ A Walk to Remember is the object of the study. The research instrument uses observation sheets, while the data collection is based on library research. This is a qualitative research that used structuralism theory by Levi-Strauss. By using the structuralism theory, the analysis of the study was conducted through binary opposition found in the novel. This study results in several findings as follows: 1) Landon thinks and acts worse when logic dominance his mind, while emotion makes Landon feels and acts better. As Landon grows up and maturing, he began to ignore his logic and believe in his emotion to solve problems and make decision in his life. 2) Within the deeper analysis, the novel A Walk to Remember also represents logic and emotion as a choice for decision making in life through the characteristic of Landon and Jamie. They choose to believe in their emotion and decide to marrying each other. They look for their purpose in life by listening to heart to make decisions, rather than making logical choices.
