Abstract

This research is representing other women to rebel women's lives and to examine conditions that modify feminists’ support for women as targets of gender discrimination. The topic of this research is the gender discrimination experienced by the main character in Well’s Ann Veronica. The objectives of this research are: to explain how gender discrimination experienced and to what extent the main character struggles for gender equality as described in Well’s Ann Veronica. This research used the qualitative descriptive to answer the question and explain the data. Ann Veronica by Well’s is used as the object of the study. The research instrument uses observation sheets, while the data collection is based on the library research. The discussion was conducted by analyzing related the phenomenon in the society by using Gender Studies theory the heading of sociology of literature approach. The result in several findings as follows: 1) to explain how gender discrimination experienced as the result of feminism as reflected in H.G. Wells’ Ann Veronica can be seen through its intrinsic elements especially from the characters and their conflicts. The main character gender discrimination also can be seen from the setting in the novel such as in the house and in society. From the character conflict it can be seen that Ann Veronica experienced gender discrimination from various parties around her. And 2) to describe the extent of Ann Veronica to get struggles for Gender Equality. Those are First, Ann veronica decided to run away from her father’s house. She wanted to choose her own life. She only had a single chance. Second, Ann Veronica worked at the laboratory to show to her father, her aunt, her brothers, and people that a woman could do what men could. Ann Veronica's feminism can be seen in her fight for economic, political (as her involvement in the suffragettes' raid shows), educational, and sexual freedom, the freedom that puts her on equal footing with men.
