Abstract
This study aims to see how far the oral tradition plays a role in becoming a social science education media in Gunungpati society Begining from the problem of social change which is increasingly happening has changed the social orientation of the original traditional Gunungpati community into a semi-modern society with the mastery of technology and modern science. The question is how the oral tradition in the 21st Century is able to provide value education in society. The discussion is not address formal social science education, but social science education in society. The research method used is qualitative method with case study design. This design is chosen, given the object being studied is very distinctive and needs to be participated in participating to obtain accurate data. Key findings in this study include; 1) Basically an oral tradition has benefits in social science education in society, since humans are basically educandum beings which means can be educated and must get education from an early age and wherever located, and 2) Gunungpati society still feel the usefulness of the oral tradition in the transmission process social values that function for entertainment, education, recollections of the Past (historical learning), solidarity and togetherness, social control, protest function and social criticism, and finally religious functions.
