Abstract

Anxiety is one of the psychological factors appearing during the learning process. It contributes to the students’ negative perceptions of failure in learning a foreign language due to several factors. The students who have intelligence in other subjects may get emotional fear in learning English because their previous experiences get emotional feelings of anxiety in English activities. This research was conducted to explaint the students’ anxiety influencing learning English and analyze the relationship between the students’ anxiety and learning English. The research used a qualitative approach. The researcher collected the data by using observations, open-ended questionnaires, interviews, and documents. There were 17 students in the ninth grade of Junior high school in Brebes Regency, Central Java Province, who participated in this research. Three major phases of data analysis are data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing established to analyze the data. The researcher found (1) the factor which influencing students’ anxiety in learning listening consist of two factors, there were tension and worry over English listening and lack of self-confidence, (2) three factors that triggered the students’ anxiety in learning speaking, namely communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation, (3) the factor which influencing students’ anxiety in learning reading, such as fear of making mistakes and worry about the reading effect, (4) three factors of the students’ anxiety in the learning writing were low confidence in English writing, dislike of English writing, and the English writing evaluation, and (5) the relationship between the students’ anxiety and learning English were influenced by specific-situational anxiety. The situation-specific of anxiety could represent an uncomfortable experience emotionally and physically for some students in learning English in the class. The factors that appeared above become the basis of the psychological factor that causes students’ anxiety in learning English as a foreign language. These psychological aspects include frustration, fear, nervousness, worry, being afraid of making mistakes, and being underestimated in their abilities.
