Abstract

This study aimed to explain the types of directive speech acts found in Coco movie. It also focused on revealing the aims of indirect directive speech acts used by the characters of this movie. This study was a descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were the utterance performed by the characters of this movie in the form of a phrase, clause, and sentence which convey directive speech acts. This study analyzed both forms of speech acts, direct and indirect speech acts. Based on the theory of directive speech acts proposed by Searle (1979), the findings showed that there were 6 types of directive speech acts found in Coco movie. They were command, request, suggestion, invitation, warning, and prohibition. Command was the most dominant directive speech acts found in this movie with 62 utterances. It was respectively followed by request (22 utterances), prohibition (7 utterances), invitation (5 utterances), suggestion (4 utterances), and warning (1 utterance). It was also found that there were three aims of indirect directive speech acts performed by the characters in this movie. The first aim was to make the utterances performed to be politer. The second aim was to increase the force of the message communicated by the speaker. The last aim was to fulfill the speaker’s desire when they have a lower position or power than the hearer. In conclusion, it was clear that the use of directive speech acts was to make another person do something they want, whether it was performed directly or indirectly.
