Abstract

In English as a foreign language or EFL countries like Indonesia, EFL students may have limited exposure to target language in the outside classroom, since in EFL countries, English is commonly used only in an English classroom. Therefore, when the teacher applies the English language in their class, students may perceive a positive or negative perception of English use. However, studies related to students’ perception of the use of target language and their language preference are limited in Indonesia, especially for vocational students major in hotel accommodation. In Indonesia, hotel accommodation students have different educational backgrounds with high-school students. Based on that situation, the researcher conducted a study aimed at investigating hotel accommodation students’ perceptions toward the use of target language and students’ language preferences in an EFL classroom. In this study, a qualitative approach was employed by using a questionnaire and interview as the instruments. Thirty-three students of grade twelve of vocational school major in hotel accommodation class were the participants of this study. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that most of the students had a positive perception of the use of English (target language) in their English class since it is beneficial for improving their English skills and preparing for their future careers as hoteliers. The research also found that students preferred to have mixed-language in which English as the primary language in class, but the students’ L1 is tolerated to be used, especially in explaining unfamiliar English words and English sentences.
