Abstract

Keyword: Unemployment, Labor Force, Vocational High School Graduates Unemployment is one of the employment problems facing by developing countries. So that the quality of human resources supported by education must be improved and adapted to the needs of employment. This research background is the high level of open unemployment with the latest vocational education in Sleman Regency. Whereas, vocational high school is a middle school specially prepares students to be able to enter the work field with variety programs offered. This research aims to determine factors that can affect the chances of vocational high school graduates becoming unemployed by using logit regression analysis. The variables used in this research is gender, status of school origin, national exam scores, work experience,residence location, and ability in English Language. This study uses primary data obtained by questionnaires distributed to vocational high school's alumnus who graduated in 2018 and 2019 using non probability sampling techniques. Respondents consisted of unemployed graduates and employed graduates. The results of this research shows gender variable and school origin status have a positive and significant effect on unemployment probabilities for vocational school's graduates. The variables of national exam scores, work experience and ability in english language have a negative and significant effect on the probabilites of vocational school graduate being unemployed. Meanwhile, the duration of work experience and distance from residence to urban area don't have a significant effect on the probabilities of unemployment among vocational school's graduates. The suggestion of this research is vocational school's graduate must have entrepreneurial spirit. Public schools adjust the skills taught to industry needs. Vocational school's teachers provide socialization about the importance of national test scores and motivate students to improve national test scores. Students should equip themselves with work experience while they are still in school, besides that the school must help students to get work experience by collaborating with institutions or companies. Vocational school's graduate shouldn't consider the distance from their residence to work location. And lastly, vocational students must improve their proficiency in English.
