Abstract
Translation is changing an activity of changing a language into another language spoken or written. Translation’s always been international since its popularity since 1900s year. It has become something which affects the development of world literature. This research was conducted to identify the translation methods used by the translator in translating Jane Austen’s Emma, to describe the methods used from the English original version and the Indonesian translation of the novel. The translation method used in this research was proposed by Newmark. This research applied qualitative method to describe the aims of this study. The data were analyzed by comparing the Engllish novel and its Indonesian translation. The result of the study showed that (1) there were 1528 data of the dialogues, (2) eight methods were used to translate Emma into Indonesian; these include word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, adaptation translation, fee translation, idiomatic translation, and communicative translation, (3) the most translation method used was communicative translation method.
