Abstract
Translating literary works, particularly in translating proper names is challenging for certain reasons. Most of the them are not simply identifying labels but rather have some their own particular meanings. It results in some significant consequences and considerations in the rendering process of translation. This research article attempted to find out the translation techniques used in translating proper names in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as the original English novel after being translated into Indonesian version of Harry Potter dan Piala Api published by Gramedia Pustaka Utama by Listiana Srisanti. The objectives of this research were to describe the choice of translation techniques used in the novel. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The translation techniques analysis was done by using Fernandes' (2006) classification of translation techniques. The total number of data is 238 data of proper names of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire novel. The percentage of each technique is as follows (1) rendition which occurs 110 times and represents 27.7%, (2) Copy which occurs 238 times and represents 59.95%, (3) Transcription which occurs 14 times or about 59.95%, (4) Substitution which occurs 6 times and represents 1.51%, (5) Recreation which occurs 7 times and represents 1.76%, (6) Deletion which occurs 2 times and represents 0.5%, (7) Addition which occurs 11 times and represents 2.78%, (8) Transposition which occurs 7 times and represents 1.76%, (9) Phonological replacement which occurs 2 times and represents 0.5%, and (10) there is no conventionality technique found in this novel.
