Keywords: Direct Procedures, Translation Quality, Translation Problems This study was carried out to assess the quality of direct procedures according to Larson’s (1984) translation quality assessment. To achieve the objective, this study was qualitatively observed. The third semester students of English department at University of Swadaya Gunung Jati were involved as the subjects of the study and the objects were 17 English folklore drama scripts translated by the students into Indonesian. The instrument of the study was observation checklist supported by the use of investigators triangulation. There were 445 direct procedures consisting 45 borrowing, 18 calque, and 382 literal translations found as the corpus data in which the quality then be assessed by the researcher and 10 investigators. Therefore, the result of quality assessment was obtained from 11 respondents. Based on the research, there were three main findings. The First, the accuracy value obtained from the assessment of direct procedures is 56%. It indicates that the students have translated several direct procedures in the sense and they are generally well interpreted. However, the inaccuracy value is 44%. It shows that the intended meaning of some source texts is changed in the target texts. The second, the clarity assessment of direct procedures gets more value than unclearness. 70.6% direct procedures confirm that the general meaning of some target texts are easily understood by the target readers. However, the unclearness value of 29.4% implies that a few of students’ direct procedures are not easy to understand. The third, the value of naturalness is more obtained than unnaturalness. More than 50% of direct translations do not sound foreign in general. The style of translation is natural and not monotonous. However, the other students’ direct translations are interrupted by several parts that sound strange. The problem derived from students’ direct procedures is the use of loan word and word by word translation which are unacceptable in the culture of target readers and can create misinterpretation. Therefore, the students should increase their awareness of the structural and metalinguistic parallelisms between source and target language. Moreover, besides direct translation, they are also suggested to master other translation procedures and strategies.
