Abstract

This study discusses idiomatic translation strategies and degree of meaning equivalence in Nicholas Sparks’ A Walk to Remember translated into Kan Kukenang Selalu. The objectives of the study are: 1) to analyze the strategies used to translate the idiomatic expressions in the novel “A Walk to Remember” into Indonesian, 2) to analyze the degree of equivalence of the Indonesian translation, and 3) to find out the relation between the strategy used and the degree of equivalence. The translation strategies used in this study are proposed by Baker while the degrees of meaning equivalence are analyzed by using Bell’s theory. This research belongs to descriptive research using qualitative method to describe the objectives of this study. The sources of data for this study are the idioms from Nicholas Sparks’ A Walk to Remember and the Indonesian translation. The data are analyzed by comparing the idioms in the English version to the Indonesian translation. They were identified according to the strategies used and degree of meaning equivalence. Lastly, the results of the analysis from both translation strategies and the degree of meaning equivalence were compared to find out the relation between the two. The findings of the analysis are as follows. First, the translator employs four strategies in translating idioms in the novel A Walk to Remember into Indonesian: using idiom with similar meaning and form, using idiom with similar meaning but dissimilar form, translation by paraphrase, and translation by omission. Second, in terms of degree of meaning equivalence, it was found that most of the data were identified into fully equivalent translation with complete meaning. Third, in the relation between translation strategies used and the degree of meaning equivalence, it was revealed that the translation strategies used mostly produce fully equivalent with complete meaning
