Abstract
This research aims to find the Grice's maxims flouting in the subtitling of Central Intelligence movie. The objectives of this study are (1) to identify the pragmatic equivalence and types of Grice’s maxim flouting in the subtitling of Central Intelligence, (2) to describe the strategies of Grice’s maxim flouting in the subtitling of Central Intelligence. Thus, this research used Grice's maxims theory as basic notions. Flouting maxims is one of the forms of a non-observed Cooperative Principle. This research designed as descriptive qualitative research. This research can be called descriptive qualitative research because the writer classified the flouting maxims by using Grice's theory in Central Intelligence movie. The writer listed and described the data obtained by classifying the data in the subtitle of the movie and describing the pragmatic equivalence of the flouting maxims. The findings showed the achievement of pragmatic equivalence in the subtitling of the Grice's maxims flouting in Central Intelligence movie. The researcher found 41 samples and 42 utterances flouted Grice's maxims which pragmatically equivalent in terms of flouting maxims. The researcher found 15 samples of flouting the quality maxim, 10 samples of flouting the quantity maxim, 9 samples of flouting the relation maxim, and 8 samples of flouting the manner maxim. In this study, the researcher concludes that the pragmatic equivalence of the flouting maxims in the subtitle of Central Intelligence movie has been achieved. The researcher suggests being careful when analyzing the data. The translator must watch the whole movie and pay attention to the context of the utterances, not the literal meaning. There are lots of cases the implicature happens especially by flouting the maxim. The culture, emotions, and characters beyond the movie also involved in pragmatics analysis.
