Abstract

This research is purposed to find out if there is a correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their writing ability, Find out the S1-students’ mastery of English grammar and to find out the S1-students’ mastery of writing. In this research, the writer used quantitative method by Pearson correlation product moment. There are two variables in this research. Students’ Grammar mastery as independent variable (variable X) and Writing ability as dependent variable (variable Y), the technique of collecting the data was by using two tests. Grammar test is using TOEFL test that consists of 40 items of multiple choice, as for Writing test, the writer is using simple essay question for the students. The object of the study is 30 students from sixth semester students of English Education of UNNES. But actually the subject is only 25 students, because of absence of some students. From the calculation by using the product moment formula, it was found out the mean of the scores of the grammar test is 64,64. The mean of writing ability score of the students’ is 66.08. The result of applying the ��� (��) distribution 0.241. the degree of significance 5% is 1.71 and the degree of significance 1% is 2.5. it means � � is lower than �� (0.241 < 1.71). So, null hypothesis (Ho) is accepted and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is rejected. The conclusion of this research is that there is no significant correlation between student’s grammar mastery and their writing ability.
