Abstract

This study was aimed to analyze the use of translation methods on Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe from english into indonesian. The purposes of this study were to describe the translation methods used, to determine, classify, and to count the dominant translation methods used in the Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe novel from both versions which are English and Indonesian. English version is published by penguin random house UK that consists of 258 pages and Indonesian version is translated by Haksan Wirasutisna and Rusman Sutiasumarga published by balai pustaka. I employed Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe novel in both language version as the object of this study. This study was a descriptive qualitative study since this final project concerned more with sentences rather than numbers as the data analysis. In collecting the data, I classified the data in forms of sentence, clause, and phrase which are divided according to the method used. At last, the data were counted in order to find the dominant translation methods used in the Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe novel. This research use Newmark (1988) translation methods classification to analyze the data which are word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, free translation, adaptation translation, idiomatic translation, semantic translation and communicative translation. The results of this study showed that there are seven methods found in the data. They are: (1) word for word occurs 17 times, (2) literal occurs 26 times (3) faithful occurs 11 times (4) semantic occurs 1 times, (5) free occurs 180 times, (6) adaptation occurs 6 times, (7) idiomatic occurs 5 times, (8) communicative does not occur. It is suggested that future researcher needs to consider assessing the quality of this translation.
