Abstract

Transposition is a technique to overcome the problems in translating in which there is difference of grammatical structure. The form of a sentence changes but the meaning stays the same. This study is aimed to investigate how transpositions occur in Scandal in Bohemia short story. The data are taken from the direct speeches and analyzed based on Catford’s theory of transposition (1965). Qualitative method is used in the study. The methods of investigation contain the process of collecting, analyzing, and describing the data. The data are collected by reading, inventorying, and classifying them according to the types of transposition. At last, they are analyzed and some of them are presented with detail explanation. There are 152 transpositions occur in this research which cover all types of transposition. The most frequent occurrence is structure-shift with 56 (36.84%) data found, it occurs by changing the sentence form and structure. The next is unit-shift which is translating the data into different unit with 48 (31.57%) data; level-shift which is changing grammatical item into lexical item with 32 (21.05%) data, class-shift which is translating the data into different rank with 14 (9.2%) data, and the last intra-system shift which changing plural noun into singular noun or vice versa with 2 (1.31%) data.
