Abstract

The study analyzed translation techniques used in the Indonesian translation of The Murders in The Rue Morgue by Edgar Allan Poe. The objectives of the study are to describe the translation techniques and to show the most translation technique used in the Indonesian translation of The Murders in The Rue Morgue. The English short story published by Graham’s Magazine in 1841 and the Indonesian translation published by Relift Media translated by Ilunga d’Uzak in 2015. All the data collected were analyzed by using translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). The result of the study showed that there are thirteen translation techniques found in the data. They are (1) Literal Translation, (2) reduction, (3) linguistic compression, (4) modulation, (5) borrowing, (6) amplification, (7) transposition, (8) particularization, (9) established equivalent, (10) adaptation, (11) generalization, (12) discursive creation, and (13) linguistic amplification. The most dominant translation technique used is literal translation, means that the translator of the short story in this current research The Murders in The Rue Morgue preserved the ST (Source Text) in terms of the chosen words and the grammatical structure. Thus, it caused the result of the translation was odd and hard to be understood by the reader. The further research is suggested to consider the quality assestment of this translation related to accuracy, clarity (readability), and acceptability (naturalness).
