Abstract

This final project is a research which attempted to analyze the use of translation techniques and their acuracy. The objectives study of the study were to describe the translation techniques used to translate lyrics and to identify their accuracy in translated lyrics of Coldplay’s songs in Ghost Stories album. Coldplay is a British rock band formed in 1996 that have won nemurous music awards. This research applied the theory proposed by Molina and Albir about translation techniques and the accuracy criteria of translation assessment proposed by Nababan. Text analysis was done by comparing the original version of the lyrics and the translated lyrics to find out the most used of translation techniques, and rater survey was also done to find out the accuracy level of the translated lyrics. This study was conducted qualitatively since it used the description of the researcher’s interpretation based on the result of the research. In analyzed the data, steps which are used by the researcher are collected the data, classifying the data, counting the data and reporting the data analysis. The results of the study showed that there were 188 data of translated lyrics and eleven translation techniques found in this study. The translation technique mostly used was literal translation, followed by discursive creation, established equivalent, linguistic compression, reduction, linguistic amplification, particularization, compensation, amplification, borrowing, and generalization. In terms of accuracy, three raters found that around 92,73% data were translated accurately, 6,03% data were translated less accurately, and 1,24% data were translated inaccurately. The translation tecniques with the highest accuracy were generalization, amplification, particularization, followed by established equivalent, linguistic compression, literal translation, linguistic amplification, discursive creation, and reduction. The researcher suggested that this research can be the source for making research in the future. The future researchers can make similar research about other translation quality assessment such as readability, naturalness, clarity and singability to develop translation studies.
