Abstract

Watumite Village is one of the poorest villages in NTT. All Watumite villagers are livelihoods as cloves farmer . Price of cloves in the market is so high that in one harvest farmers can reap profits up to hundreds millions of rupiah. People who usually live inadequately are faced with huge revenues in an instant. This encourages people to massive consumption to realize their unfulfilled desires and needs in the days before the harvest. The purpose of this study is to determine the phenomenon of poverty and consumptive behavior in the clove farming community in Watumite Village. In this research, the authors used qualitative methods and used the ethnographic approach. The results of the study found that: (1) Watumite villagers have indicators of poverty according to the Watumite community: (a) Can not hold festivity, either custom feast , religious festivals, weddings, and graduation celebrations. (b) Can not send their children to school or unable to continue their studies to a higher level of education, (c) does not have a walled house called Rumah Batu . (2) Some forms of consumptive behavior in the Watumite community include (a) consumptive behavior for partying purposes, custom feast, religious festivals, weddings, and graduation celebrations. (b) Consumptive behavior for the lifestyle of entertainment by doing recreation to the city, and shopping. (3) Some factors that encourage the community to consume in Watumite Village are (a) to be recognized in social statue by society, (b) the influence of external culture, (c) high clove farmer's income, (d) culture or tradition, (e) technology. The conclusion of this research is that poverty in the eyes of the Watumite community is measured from aspects of culture, education, and residence. Consumptive behavior in Watumite society is formed where society put traditional of organizing the festivity on main priority of their life need compared with the basicneeds and education of children.
