Abstract

The sexual division of labor in the "sirtu" mining of Pabelan River, Magelang regency, as a result of the override of women in the field of work. This sexual division of labor causes women in the area earning fewer jobs and less income than men. The purposes of this study were (1) to find out how sexual division of labor occurred in the "sirtu" mining of the Pabelan River, (2) to find out the society's point of view towards the female workers in the "sirtu" mining of Pabelan River. The method that was used in this research was a qualitative method which used the concept of gender, the theory of nurture, and structural. The location of the research was in Pabelan River, Magelang Regency. The main informants of this research were the male and female workers who are the miners. While the supporting informants of this research were the society of the mining areas, truck drivers, and local officers or RT Chief. The method that was used to collect the data was using observation, interview and documentation techniques. Triangulation technique was used to investigate the validity of the data. The method that was used to analyze the data was a qualitative data analysis method which consisted of data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. The results of the research showed (1) the sexual division of labor which occurred in the “sirtu” mining of Pabelan River, could be seen from the number and types of women's occupation that are less than men's occupation, if a man can be a load worker and miner, a woman can only be a stone hitter to be used as „split‟, with the existence of the sexual division of labor women earn less income than men. (2) The society's point of view towards female miners in the Pabelan River showed that being a female miner is fine as long as she does not leave her job as a housewife. The conclusions of this research were the female miners have been working in the Pabelan River since the opening of Pabelan River into "sirtu" mining in the 1970s, however, the sexual division of labor still occured in the sand and rock mining (sirtu) of the Pabelan River. Society‟s point of view also showed that they used to see the women who are working in the mining of Pabelan River. The suggestions for the communities in the Pabelan River mining area, they can provide some opportunities for women to do the same job as men in order to achieve gender equality. For the researcher, hopefully the next researcher can do further research to complete this research.
