Abstract

ABSTRACT Problem caused by high viscosity of biosolar B30, i.e. mixture of biodiesel (30%) and diesel (70%), could be fixed by additive. Butanol is known as having many advantages as additive such as density and kinematic viscosity reduction on biosolar. This research studies correlation of butanol ratio and mixing temperature with B30's kinematic viscosity as well as mixing scale up to design the mixing tank. Mixing process was performed using a 500 mL mixer equipped with heater. Based on obtained result, effect of butanol ratio to viscosity is analyzed as well as effect of temperature and mixing duration to viscosity. Lowest viscosity is obtained at 7% butanol ratio, 75 oC temperature, and 15 minutes mixing duration was 3.65 mm2/s. This value is in accordance to biosolar standard (ASTM D-445). At this condition, produced biosolar has density of 850.8 kg/m3, flash point of 50 oC, and cetane index of 51.7. Correlation between butanol ratio to viscosity could be expressed quantitatively according to Bingham formula (average error of 6.11%). Meanwhile correlation between temperature to viscosity follows polynomial Andrade (average error of 3.69x10-3%). Reynolds number in this mixture system is between 18115-19508, which shows turbulence mixing flow. Calculation of power and volume equation from scale-up ratio procedure is P= 0.2943.V 0,6667. Keywords: Biosolar B30, butanol, Bingham, mixing scale-up, polynomial Andrade.
