Abstract

This study is carried to find out how do Libyan students join clauses to construct complex sentence besides the errors that made by students. In order to highlight the necessity of explaining the English clauses in a way that enables the Libyan university students to use and join clauses and to understand the different types of sub clauses and how these clauses can be used in different situations. The problem statements were formulated as follows: (1) How do Libyan students join two clauses to construct complex sentence? (2) What common errors were made by the them? The objective of this study was due to two questions stated in the statements of the problems, their answers would be derived to meet the following objectives: To explain how do Libyan students use clauses to construct complex sentence and to describe the common errors made by students. The design of the research was a descreptive method and the instrument was used in data analysis was conventional grammar. The findings of this study had shown that the students’ errors in joining clauses to construct complex sentence had four factors which considered the main errors such as: (1) the foreign language,they cannot understand the differences of sub clauses between native language (L1) with target language (L2), (2) Students could not study well because some of them are not supported by the other English books (3) not understanding the information structure of the whole sub clause, (4) the limited processing capacity of knowledge. In conclusion, this study could figure out some suggestions that the Libyan university and students might follow which they are; the students should pay more attention to study grammar while the teacher is explaining. The Libyan university should obtain new and modern methods in teaching The students have to practice especially in learning grammar books when they have leisure time and in the last the teacher is better for using the media in teaching learning process in order get the students’ interest, motivation, and special types of learner.
