Abstract

This study aims to obtain a description of eleventh-grader’s higher order thinking skill and process at SMA Negeri 6 Semarang. The analysis of this skill had been conducted by reviewing cognitive indicators in the dimensions of analyzing, evaluating, and creating according to revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. This study was a qualitative descriptive research. The main subject of it was 12 students of class of XI MIA 5 at SMA Negeri 6 Semarang consisting of four high category students, five medium category students, and three low category students. The data collecting techniques of it were test, interview, observation, and documentation. Triangulations of techniques and sources were selected to examine the research result data validity. The research results obtained (1) high category subject and medium category subject fulfilled two indicators of high order thinking skill that were indicator of analyzing input information and distributing or structuring it into smaller parts for recognizing its pattern or correlation and indicator of being able to recognize and distinguish causal factors from a complex scenario, and low category subject could not fulfil all indicators of the skill; (2) thinking process of high category subject in the planning phase was constructing understanding and opinion, in the solving and supervising phases were constructing understanding and opinion, and drawing conclusion, in the evaluation phase was drawing conclusion; medium category subject in the planning phase was constructing understanding and opinion, in the solving and supervising phases were constructing opinion and drawing conclusion, in the evaluation phase was drawing conclusion; whereas low category subject in the planning phase was constructing understanding, in the solving and supervising phases were constructing opinion, and in the evaluation phase was drawing conclusion.
