Abstract

The lack of performance and the concept understanding of Indonesian students in science require improvement in learning. This study is an experimental research aims to determine whether Project-Based Learning (PjBL) can develop the performances and improve the concept understanding of eighth grade junior high school students. This research used quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group design. The population was all of class VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Karangawen. The sample was determined by purposive sampling technique. The experimental class was class VIII G and the control class was class VIII H. The classes were given different treatments, the experimental class was taught using PjBL model while the control class was taught using Discovery model. Based on the gain test, an increase in performance of group work on the experimental class showed the value of 〈g〉 = 0,385 in moderate category, while the control class showed the value of 〈g〉 = 0,297 in low category. The improvement of performance of oral presentation was better than the control class although both classes were at low category. The performance of collecting data in the experimental class showed higher average value than the control class, it has showed with t_count (2,267> t_table (1,992). The result of pretest-posttest gain test showed an increase of average of concept understanding in the experimental class of 〈g〉 = 0,688 in moderate category and the control class of 〈g〉 = 0,601 in moderate category. The experimental class completeness was 50 % and the control class completeness was 21 %. The result of right side t-test showed that t_count (2,599)> t_table (1,992) at 5 % significance level, it proved that the concept understanding of experimental class is better than the control class. Based on the simple linear regression test showed that there is a strong relationship between the performance of students with the concept understanding of students' results. Performance of students a positive influence on students' concept understanding. The conclusion of this research is learning by using Project-Based Learning (PjBL) can develop performances and improve the concept understanding of eighth grade junior high school students.
