Abstract

This study aims to describe the influence of vocabulary mastery and grammar tothe French reading skill of the twelfth graders of MAN 2 Brebes as well as to analyze the errors found on the test results of vocabulary mastery, grammar and reading skills of the twelfth graders of MAN 2 Brebes. The research was conducted at MAN 2 Brebes, on August 2015. It was a correlationnal search. The population of this research was twelfth graders of MAN 2 Brebes. The sample of this research was 53 students who were taken randomly from two classes. They are twelfth graders of science 3 and religion. Therefore, the sampling technique used in this studywas quotarandom technique. Instruments for collecting data in this study were the test of vocabulary mastery, grammar and French reading skill. The content validity was used to test the validity of the instrument. KR-21 and product moment were used to test the reliability of the instruments. Data analysis technique used in this study was correlation and regression statistical technique (simple and double). The results of the analysis show that: (1) there is a positive influence between reading skill to vocabulary mastery for about 18%; (2) grammar mastery to intermediate reading 28%; (3) vocabulary mastery and grammar skill to reading skill 32%). It can be seen that the influence of grammar mastery to reading skill is stronger compared to vocabulary mastery to reading skill. Therefore, teachers must prioritize or emphasize the improvement of grammar aspect than vocabulary.
