Abstract

This final project is concerned with using storytelling as a technique to improve student’s listening skill to the fifth grade students of SDN Wonosekar Pati. Teaching listening to elementary school students is not an easy task. It requires a lot of creativity from a professional teacher. This study aims at finding out the students’ achievement in listening skill through using storytelling as a technique. To achieve the objective of the study, the researcher conducted an action research. The population of the study was the fifth graders of SDN Wonosekar Pati. The total number of the sample was 26 students. In conducting this action research, two cycles was applied. The activity in the cycle 1 was only using gesture. Meanwhile, the activity in the cycle 2 was using gesture and color picture. There were three tests in this study; pre test, cycle 1 test and cycle 2 test (post test). The result of the analysis showed that there was a significant improvement of pre test, cycle 1 test and cycle 2 test (post test).. The average achievement of the students’ pre-test was 57.76%; 71.00% in the cycle 1 test; and 81.76% in the post-test. This improvement was affected by the students’ interest in storytelling technique, the students’ motivation toward the existence of storytelling technique, and the students’ comprehension of the story as indicated from the questionnaire result. This can be inferred from the questionnaire result that the students’ interest in storytelling is high; the students’ motivation in learning English using storytelling is high; the storytelling could help the students to comprehend the story. The result of this study showed that using storytelling as a technique in teaching listening is very beneficial for the students.
