Abstract

This study is about values of Japanese tea ceremony for middle class society after Second World War in a Japanese novel by Yasunari Kawabata entitled Thousand Cranes. The purpose of the study is to elaborate how middle class people respect and practice tea ceremony as it is a Japanese tradition. This analysis divides in five chapters. The first chapter will be the elaboration of the background why the writer choose the topic as the her final project. The second chapter will be explanation of each theory and concept which are used by the writer during her analysis. The third chapter is the method of the writer in working on her final project. Here the writer uses descriptive qualitative research as a method. The fourth chapter will be the main discussion of the final project where the writer analyzes and combines the theory and the analysis. The fifth chapter will be the conclusion of the analysis and the suggestion. Thousand Cranes is an interesting novel. It can be an additional reading for English department student to be a comparing material between eastern values and western values and between British tea habit and Japanese tea habit.
