Abstract

The topic of this study is “The Mastery Of Teacher’s Instructions Of The Elementary School Students”. The objectives of the study are to describe the effectiveness of Total Physical Response method in teaching listening to the sixth year students of SD Negeri Lempong Sari 01 Semarang especially about classroom instructions and to identify the advantages of using Total Physical Response method in teacher’s instructions. The writer used action research in this research. This action research consists of three steps, and every step includes four activities, there were planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The first step was the pre test, the second step was the action. The action consisted of two cycles. The difference between these cycles was on the materials used. Each cycle consisted of teaching learning process and a formative test. The last step was the post test and answering questionnaire. The questionnaire was meant to answer the problems of the study. In analyzing the data, the writer used a descriptive qualitative and a simple quantitative measurement to find the result. The analysis of the data showed that there was a significant student’s achievement in the pre test and post test. The student’s achievement in the post test (88.86%) was higher than the pre test (50.18%). The average of the student’s achievement in the first cycle was (86.32%), and the second cycle was (87.20%). The result showed that the mastery listening in the second cycle is better than the first cycle. The main factor affecting this improvement was the student’s interest in teaching learning process through Total Physical Response. Based on the data, the writer concluded that teaching listening to elementary school students about classroom instructions using Total Physical Response is effective and has some advantages for students to mastery of teacher’s instructions especially for the elementary school students. It is suggested that TPR in teaching listening is recommended for the English teacher.
