Abstract

All people in our society have a need to get respect others. This final project presents a descriptive study of the gay and AIDS infected person’s struggle to gain respect and get his human right. The purpose of the analysis is to describe Andy’s struggle for human right in his work groups, and society. The object of this study is the film Philadelphia by Jonathan Demme. The method of this study is the descriptive qualitative method. The data is about the discrimination that the movie tells about. In collecting the data I used documentation. I used the descriptive method to analyze and to describe the data because in descriptive method, the data are gathered in the form of sentences. I select the data which is related to the topic of the study. I classify the data into two topics. Those are discrimination of AIDS and gay people. Finally I drew conclusions based on the analyzed data which were presented in the last chapter. I also used some information from books, dictionaries, and sites to support the theory related to the topic of the final project. The result of the study are : (1) the characters of Andrew Beckett are infected by AIDS, gay, patient, and loving his family, and Joe Miller’s characters are afraid of AIDS, anti-homosexual, and sympathetic; (2) the problems is discrimination of AIDS and gay that happens in social services, and in the work place. Sometimes it happens in the family, but this movie shows the support of the family to the victim who is discriminated; (3) the struggle of the Main character in the movie is about to prove the discrimination, to get a lawyer and get over from AIDS. Hopefully, through this final project, people will understand more clearly about AIDS disease; how it spreads and infects the others, and about gay people in general. So they can treat the victims of AIDS and gays more fairly because they have the same rights as a human being.
