Abstract

This final project is based on a study which attempted to examine the effectiveness of video + audio and audio only of the “Ganges” (a documentary published by BBC Natural History Unit) for improving listening skill of senior high school students. Since English is the first foreign language in Indonesia, they need media to facilitate the teaching learning process especially in listening. This study attempts to answer the following question: is using both the audio and video of the “Ganges” (a documentary published by BBC Natural Unit) more effective than the audio only for improving listening skill of senior high school students? The main objective of this study is to find out the effectiveness of using both the audio and video of the “Ganges”to the students’ listening skill compared to using the same documentary but with its audio only. A quantitative study is used in this study. While, the population was the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Demak in the academic year 2008/2009. The number of population was 360. The students were from 9 classes. Class XI IPA 1 was chosen as the experimental group and XI IPA 2 as the control group. The research was the experimental design. Before the experiment, I held a try out test to class IX IPS 1 to obtain the instrument’s validity, reliability, item difficulty and item discrimination. Then I began the research by giving a pre-test to the students. After that, the treatments were given to them. The activity continued with answering formative test for each treatment. At the end of the research, I gave a post-test to them. The mean of the post-test of experimental group (57.42) was higher than the mean of the pre-test of experimental group (43.3). The t-test result (2.91) was higher than t-table (1.99). It means that there is a significant difference in achievement between students who were taught listening comprehension using video and audio of the “Ganges” compared to those who were taught listening comprehension by using audio only of “Ganges”. Finally, I concluded that video + audio of the “Ganges” (a documentary published by BBC Natural History Unit) was effective and it could be used as media in teaching listening.
