Abstract
An English textbook does not only function as a guidebook for students in learning English, but also a strategic medium in which sexism can be expressed covertly. Regarding that fact, this study aims to describe a particular way which is used to convey sexist attitudes and values in English textbook Linked to the World 3 published by Yudhistira Publisher and determine the position of the textbook from the point of view of sexism. In so doing, I used qualitative approach and simple quantification to support the findings. Furthermore, I used experiential meaning based analysis to analyze clauses as they are the unit analysis of this study. Findings indicated that the English textbook Linked to the World 3 could be considered sexist textbook which portrayed unequal job distribution between female and male characters. Male characters outnumbered their female counterparts in all job categories, for instance, economy/business, administration, entertainment, artistic and spiritual and political. In percentage, the numbers of male characters involved in those job categories were 20.5%, 20.5%, 13.7%, 8.2%, and 5.5%. On the other hand, female’s representation was less than those for male’s namely 9.6%, 4.1%, 6.8%, 1.4%, and 0%. Based on the findings, I suggest that it is an immediate call to create sexism awareness among English teachers and textbook writers. Such awareness is expected to be a good precedence in mitigating and eliminating sexism in English textbooks.
