Abstract

In this study, the writer analyzed each ten students‟ conversations from education and non-education programs. From those ten students, it is gained 5 conversations. Therefore, there are total ten conversations; five conversations for both of education and non-education are analyzed. This study attempts to find out the gambit used by the education and non-education students in their conversation. The main purposes of the study are to find out the differences of gambit and type of dominant gambit used by the eighth semester education and non-education students of English Department of UNNES in the academic year 2010-2011. As the source of the data, a descriptive qualitative approach is used to explain the results of the tape recording analysis of the conversation. Besides, simple tabulation based on Keller (1988) is also used to find the purpose of the expressions occurs. The result indicates that there are differences of gambits occuring between education and non-education students. They are types of gambit which are more frequently used and also the purpose of using certain gambits. Education students mostly use linking gambit while non-education mostly used responding gambit. As analyzed from the tape recordings, it can be concluded that from the ten conversations, all the three kinds of conversation gambits based on Keller‟s classification are found. It means that gambit is really needed in conversation. Therefore, some suggestions like recommends the students to use the conversation gambit during the speaking class and ask the student to do the activity in speaking by using gambit are offered for the teachers. In addition, for the students, self-awareness of using gambit in speaking English during the class or in their daily activity especially is suggested.
