Abstract

The objectives of the study are to reveal whether or not there is a significant correlation between students’ interest in reading scientific essays, scientific vocabulary mastery and their achievement in reading comprehension. The writer stated the working hypothesis of the study as follows: “There is a significant correlation between students’ interest in reading scientific essays, scientific vocabulary mastery and their achievement in reading comprehension.” The hypothesis was changed into null hypothesis that is “There is no significant correlation between students’ interest in reading scientific essays, scientific vocabulary mastery and their achievement in reading comprehension”. The research methodology used was descriptive statistical study. To collect the data, the writer used a questionnaire and a set of tests. After getting the score of the students’ interest and the scores of the vocabulary mastery and the score of their achievement in reading comprehension, the data were statistically computed to find out the correlation between three variables. The result, both the students’ interest in reading scientific essays and scientific vocabulary mastery have significant correlation with their achievement in reading comprehension. The value of correlation coefficient R is 0.571 or 57.1%. It means that both the students’ interest in reading scientific essays and scientific vocabulary mastery influence their achievement in reading comprehension. Based on the result of the experiment, the writer suggested that in teaching reading, the lecturers should train the students with a lot of practice in reading scientific essays and scientific vocabulary mastery. On the other hand, students should read scientific essays as much as possible to enrich their knowledge.
