Abstract

This final project concerns with the effect of listening English pop songs to improve the vocabulary of the year eight students of SLTP N 1 Weleri. This is an experimental study. The population of this study is year eight students of SLTP N 01 Weleri in academic year 2009/2010. The sample for experimental class is VIII C and VIII F as a control class. I chose the sample based on the consideration that two classes of the samples had equal English achievement. The purpose of this study is to find the effectiveness of using English pop songs as teaching media to improve the student’s mastery in vocabulary at the junior high school. The analysis of the data showed that there was a significant difference of the student’s achievement of experimental class and control class in the pretest and post test. The result of the vocabulary tests were: the average pretest score was 79.23 (experimental) and 78.79 (control class); the average post test score was 89.75 (experimental) and 79.87 (control class). The result showed that the experimental class was obtained a better score than the control class. It was found that listening to English pop songs can improve the student’s mastery at vocabulary. From the computation which was meant to find out the significance of the range between experimental class and control class, it was found that the difference is considered significance (tvalue was higher than ttable ). From these data, the writer concludes that teaching listening English pop songs is effective to improve the student’s mastery of vocabulary. It is suggested that the teachers use songs as media for English teaching and learning process.
