Abstract

This final project is based on the study which attempted to analyze Western Culture Influence in Thailand Monarchy as Reflected in Margaret Landon’s Anna and the King of Siam. The western influence in this research is based on cultural assimilation concept which purposed to discuss the clash culture between western and eastern by analyzing the efforts and ways of the British people in penetrating their culture into Thailand Monarchy. Then give explanation about both of the western and eastern cultures which reflect the different idea of principles between the two countries and relate them into present social problems and facts. In explaining the concept of cultural assimilation, the method of collecting the data is reading, identifying, inventorying, and classifying. After getting the data, then she did interpreting and explaining the analysis data. The writer used references that she took from any sources such as books, internet, encyclopaedia, dictionaries and she used them in the theory to support data in her analysis. The writer used qualitative research because the data were formed in words, phrases, clauses and sentences. Cultural assimilation which is found in the novel was because of the English cultural influence in Thailand monarchy. It firstly happened when Anna Leonowens, the English governess, came and gave many changes in Thailand’s life. English is used as a universal language and the culture is regarded as a high prestige culture in the world so that the King of Siam (Thailand), S.S.P.P Maha Mongkut, who reigned at that time initiated to make Thailand take its place in world’s rapid-changing era by asking Anna to teach his children and wives all about English. As a western person, she penetrated the elements of English with her own ways as liberalist and gave many changes based on what she experienced in western countries. The effects of westernization, both good and bad sides, made by her at that time has affected the Thailand’s life up till now.
