Abstract

This research was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using blog as a medium of teaching reading descriptive text and the significant difference on reading achievement of descriptive text between two groups: who were taught using blog as a medium and those who were taught without the medium. The population of this study was the tenth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Pati in the academic year of 2011/2012. The number of the subject was 54 students. The design of this study was experimental study. The data obtained by administering reading test to the VII D as control group and VII E as experimental group. The research was started by giving a pre-test, treatment, and a post-test to both experimental group and control group. The result of the test was analyzed by using t-test formula to know the difference of the students’ achievement in reading descriptive text between two groups. In the pre-test, the average score of the experimental group was 74.00 and the control group was 74.29. The result of post-test of the experimental group was 84.62 while the control one was 80.00. The result of the t-test of mean difference was 3.44 and t-table was 1.67. It means that t-value is higher than t-table (3.44 >1.67). The calculation revealed that the hypothesis about a significant difference on reading achievement between students who were taught descriptive text with using blog as a medium and those who are taught without the medium was accepted. Based on the tests conducted, it was proved that the use of blog is effective as a medium to improve teaching reading achievement of descriptive text to the seventh year students of SMPN 3 Pati.
