Abstract

This study deals with the use of Javanese traditional game video in teaching procedure text for the seventh graders of Junior High School. The objectives of this study are to find out whether there is any significant difference in the improvement of students’ skill in writing procedure text using Javanese traditional game videos and conventional method and to find the advantages and disadvantages of the media. In order to achieve the objectives, experimental research was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Purwodadi Grobogan in the academic year 2011/2012 with the seventh graders as the population. The total sample in this study is 42 with 7F as the experimental group and 7H as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using Javanese traditional game videos and the control group was taught by using conventional method. The learners in the sample were given pre-test and post-test to know their achievement in writing. Their achievement was analyzed statistically and non-statistically. Based on the research, the mean score of control group for the pre-test is 72.62 and the post-test is 78.00; their score rose 5.38. Meanwhile, the mean score of experimental group is 72.17 for the pre-test and 80.95 for the post-test; their score rose 8.78. Those mean scores show that the experimental group performed better than the control group. The t-table for α=5% and dk=40 is 2.02 and the computation result of t-test or t-value is 2.885. Since the t-value is higher than the t-table, it means there is a significant difference between the group who was taught by using Javanese traditional game videos and the group who was taught by using conventional. Hopefully, this research can help the teachers to develop the learners’ writing skill and consider the use of Javanese traditional game videos in teaching written procedure text. Though the content of the media is old, it is one of the ways to interest the learners to conserve their traditional cultures. Moreover, by using the media, teachers not only find interesting method and media in teaching, but also insert character-building contents in the learning material.
